The Fraser Valley in beautiful British Columbia has many wonderful elements, but the accessibility to fresh fruit through the summer and autumn months would be high on my list. Each year, they come in their turn, rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, peaches and apples. And right now at this moment is…
Strawberries!
Every year, I make a journey send my mother to one of the local farm and load up with flats of strawberries. While I used to come home with four flats of berries, these days approximately two is enough to put in my freezer, make jam and just nibble on. I celebrate these berries and think of them as little treasures to be safely stored away by a domestic goddess. Nothing like placing bags of fruit in the freezer and displaying ruby red jars on the shelf to bring satisfaction to the DIYer that resides in my soul, yet seldom makes an appearance.
This weekend in the afternoon, I brought out my berry stash to wash and hull. Proud of my pile of scarlet jewels, I called one of my young adults to admire their beauty. Fully expecting them not to resist these sweet orbs, I left a few at the top that were particularly plump, dark and juicy.
Into the kitchen, they came and expressed an appropriate amount of enthusiasm for the beautiful bounty. This domestic goddess was rather pleased. Then, grabbing for the biggest berry, they exclaimed…
Ginger will love these!!!
Off they went to feed the deepest hued morsel to the guinea pig.
Then, my husband offered to help cut and hull the berries, and grabbing another lovely morsel, he fed it to Lizzie, our Beagle/Jack Russell dog.
Who then spat it out.
So he did what all logical people do when their dog does not like something - feed them another.
And she had the nerve to eat that one.
The third one got spat out again.
I am really not sure what to feel right now. Apparently, I am buying flats of strawberries at an astronomical price to feed to our pets.
And while it hurts a little that this bounty will end up in the stomachs of furry family members who have nibbled my finger thinking it was a carrot, deep, deep down I am secretly pleased.
And come to think of it, I really believe Lizzie would prefer strawberries in jam form.
you make great strawberry jam!!!!
